What is ArcGIS Online?

ArcGIS Online is the SaaS version of Esri’s ArcGIS product range. The cloud service is available as a tool for individuals or teams, where the team options are categorized according to the role a user plays within the organization, such as “GIS professional” and “Fieldworker”. These are known as “User Types”, and the prospective new customer or existing customer who wants to convert to the cloud needs to determine what licenses are needed according to their workforce composition. However, it is possible to add new users as the need arises. The “Creator” user type has administrative permissions, so at least one Creator license is always required. Unlike Adobe, view-only (Viewer) roles also require a license.

The customer can also select which of three cloud ecosystems he prefers, namely, Amazon web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Esri’s own cloud service.

Like Autodesk, ESRI has been on a drive to convert perpetual users to subscription users, but initially experienced a strong negative reaction from their ArcGIS communities, and had to rethink their strategy. There are advantages for some users migrating to ArcGIS Online, especially for individuals and small concerns, as there is no need to upgrade or pay maintenance when using the cloud version. It also makes it easy to share work via the cloud.

OpenLM provides the following functionality for monitoring ArcGIS Online Licenses:-

  • Denials Reporting No
  • Report resolution By Second
  • Borrowed License reporting Not applicable
  • Expiration Date reporting Yes
  • Multiple Server Redundancy Support Not applicable
  • Token License Support No

ArcGIS Online is only one of over 70 license managers that OpenLM can manage. Check the list.

Who is ESRI?

Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri), was founded by Jack Dangermond and his wife Laura in 1969. Jack had been working at the Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics, established by Howard Fisher. Initially, Esri was a consulting firm on spatial analysis, which gradually developed the GIS software now known as ArcGIS, the most commonly used GIS software globally, which was first released in 1981.

From their original offices in Redlands, California, they have grown and expanded the business to 49 offices globally. It is still a privately-owned family business with some 9,000 employees and over a million users.
