Interfacing Oracle Enterprise Manager with OpenLM

This document describes the steps required to interface OpenLM with the Oracle Enterprise Manager Manager to monitor license usage and obtain license statistics.

 

Requirements

To query the Oracle Enterprise Manager the following components must be installed:

  1. OpenLM Server v2x installed on a machine in your organization
  2. OpenLM Broker v23.8 or higher is installed on the same machine as the Oracle Enterprise Manager.

 

Monitoring capabilities and features

The current monitoring capabilities available for HHWU through OpenLM Broker are as follows:

3. OpenLM Broker configuration

OpenLM Broker must already be installed and configured to report to the OpenLM Server before proceeding:

  1. Open your OpenLM Broker desktop application.
  2. Click Add Port.
  3. Enter the Oracle Enterprise Manager port number (e.g. 888).
  4. Select Oracle Enterprise Manager from the “License Manager Type” drop-down menu. Click Apply.
  5. Select the Commands node. Click […] to the left of “Update path for commands:” and browse to the folder where the Oracle Enterprise Manager cSQL file is located in lmsettings. Click Update.
  6. Select the data_inquiry node under Commands then click Execute. Make sure that you see a valid output. Click Apply before clicking Execute.
    The Data Inquiry command will query the License Manager for:
    A. The total number of registered licenses according to the vendor’s license file,
    B. The number of licenses that are currently being checked out by users

The Data Inquiry is run periodically according to the time in seconds configured in the dialog box below.

  1. Select “Vendor Name to Be Filled” under Vendors. Enter Oracle in the “Vendor Name” field then click Apply.
    Click Restart Broker.

Alternative – configuration via Broker WEB UI

  1. Open any convenient web browser. In the address bar type in the following address: http://localhost:5090/ given you are on the LM server machine.
  2. Click on the License Managers tab then Add License Manager:
  3. A pop-up will open. From the drop-down list select the License Manager type and input the port number (e.g. 888). Click Add:
  4. In the Commands tab, in the Executable path field enter or browse to the folder where the Oracle Enterprise Manager SQL file located in lmsettings. Click Execute
  5. Click on the Vendors tab. Click on Add Vendor. Input the name then click Continue:
  6. Click Save.

OpenLM Server configuration

Automatic OpenLM Server configuration through EasyAdmin

If you have followed the steps in the section above, the OpenLM Broker should now be transmitting data to the OpenLM Server. The final step is to approve the configuration in EasyAdmin:

  1. Open the EasyAdmin interface either by accessing Windows Start → OpenLM → OpenLM EasyAdmin User Interface
  2. In the License Servers window, double-click on the red row that contains the details of the newly added Oracle Enterprise Manager Manager server entry.

3. In the newly opened prompt, give a descriptive name to the added connection or leave the default one. Also, leave the default type “OpenLM Generic. Click Approve

At this point, the Oracle Enterprise Manager Manager has been automatically added to the OpenLM Server and configuration is complete. It will take a few moments until the data is parsed and available. The green circle will confirm the status:

 

Manual OpenLM Server configuration

If the automatic configuration has failed, you can manually configure OpenLM Server to connect to the OpenLM Broker installation located on the Oracle Enterprise Manager Manager machine.

The hostname and port settings must match those that have been configured for OpenLM Broker.

  1. Go to Start→Administration→ License Manager Servers.
  2. Click Add LM.
  3. From the Type drop-down menu, select OpenLM Generic.
  4. Insert a description in the Description text box (e.g. “Oracle Enterprise Manager”)
  5. Set the Time Zone to where the License Server physically resides.
  6. Enter the Hostname and Port number of the machine where the Oracle Enterprise Manager LM is installed.
  7. The Triad Configuration box: unchecked?
  8. Use Broker box: checked.
  9. Click Save.

OpenLM Server is now configured to monitor the incoming data from OpenLM Broker.

 

How to verify your Oracle Enterprise Manager Manager configuration

To check if the Oracle Enterprise Manager Manager server is being monitored correctly:

  1. Open the EasyAdmin web application in your browser.
  2. Click EasyAdmin Start → Widgets → License Servers. Verify that the configured license manager(s) appears in the server list. A green circle node indicates an active connection to the license server

Please note that sometimes it may take up to 3 minutes for the status indicator to change if this is a new connection.
